Fandom meme
Tell me you want to play and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms (a list might be helpful). Then update your journal and answer the following questions:
1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
nuranar picked these fandoms of mine: Dickens, Gene Kelly, and Monk.
Charles Dickens
1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
It started in Mrs. Danelo's ninth grade English class, when there was an abridged version of Great Expectations in our literature book. I read it, then I went to the library and got the unabridged version so I could read it all without missing anything. I've been a devoted Dickensian ever since.
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
Oh, I ain't going anywhere!!
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
Book: A Tale of Two Cities. Movie adaptation: the 2008 Little Dorrit. (Though I'm rather partial to the 1958 A Tale of Two Cities as well.)
4. Do you participate in this fandom?
Seen my blog? :-)
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
Absolutely. I won't say it's necessarily easy, but the rewards are great.
Gene Kelly
1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
I was 11 or 12 and starting to get really into movie musicals. I checked out Singin' in the Rain from the library one day, and fell fathoms deep in love with the movie and with Gene. I've seen 21 of Gene's movies now, quite a few of them several times over -- and that's not counting the movies where he just popped in to do one dance number or short cameo. I've seen at least four or five of those appearances. Also one that he didn't appear in but directed (Hello, Dolly!). Also a couple of TV appearances, including a really cute Muppet Show episode!
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or move on?
I'm here for good!
3. Favorite movie?
Singin' in the Rain is still my favorite -- not just my favorite Gene movie, but my favorite movie, period.
4. Do you participate in the fandom?
It's not like there's a really active fandom, per se, though there do seem to be a lot of people that love Gene. But I've got my Gene icons, and I belong to
genekelly. And I have a few photos and things, including one nice framed photo.
Oh, and I wrote Gene's obituary for my college newspaper, back in 1996. I still have a copy of that somewhere.
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
I don't see why not! I will confess that some of the movies can be pretty hokey, as musicals often tended to be back then (though I contend that Gene made fewer hokey ones than most other people in the business). But many of them still hold up well. And Gene's dancing never, ever gets old.
Monk
1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
I was home alone one night, flipping channels, and saw that there was a new show about to premiere on USA. The network didn't have much of a reputation for good shows back then -- how things have changed! -- but I had nothing much else to do, so I thought, What the heck, I'll check it out. Two hours later, I was good and hooked. When my parents got home, I could not quit talking about this awesome new show. (Literally, I followed them around talking and talking about it!) I got them both into it, and we stayed with that show all the way to the end.
I do think they ended it at the right time -- the writing was getting a little lazy toward the end -- but it never quite lost its charm. And unlike a lot of fans, I was satisfied with the wrap-up. It wasn't perfect, but it was satisfactory.
(ETA: It seems the finale made me cry. I'd forgotten that!)
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I'll always be very fond of Monk.
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
Hard to say. There were a LOT of good episodes. But I will say that I vastly preferred Sharona to Natalie. (Sorry, Nat fans.)
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
I used to do a lot of message board discussions, but I don't really participate anymore, other than just watching the DVDs and reruns. I did go to see Tony Shalhoub in Lend Me a Tenor in New York, but I don't know if that counts, because his character was about as un-Monk-like as it's possible to be. (He was fantastic, though!)
I'll add that I never shipped Monk with anyone. Maybe it's unrealistic, but it warmed my heart that he never loved anyone but Trudy. For the character, the relationship, and the situation, it felt right.
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
I think a lot of people already are. But I would certainly recommend that anyone who hasn't seen it, check it out. It's a very easy show to like!
