And then I curled up and died

I was trying to figure out the significance of the rather random dance number on Bunheads tonight, so I went searching on Tumblr. And that, God help me, is how I found out that there are people shipping two of the young girls on the show.

PEOPLE. THEY ARE MINORS. STOP IT. JUST STOP IT.

For the love of heaven, has no one ever heard of the concept of "friendship"??? Does EVERYTHING have to be sexual?

There, there. You're just closed minded and repressed. Open your mind. It's there, It's subtext.

*runs*

Seriously, though, this is everywhere. They ship the Harry Potter kids with each other, with the teachers, with whoever. F/F, M/M, minors/adults - it matters not. They ship the Winchester brothers. BROTHERS! This is not fringe. It's mainstream fandom.

Anything less than celebrating any of it - even incest! - is called hatred and bigotry. If you dare to express any level of disagreement you'll find yourself jumped on and banned from communities faster than you can click your mouse.

I'm STILL waiting for a response from the fools who banned me at that XF comm. I asked for proof of my so-called divisive views (or whatever exact term they called it) that "quite a few" people in the comm had a problem with!

I don't get it either. It's messed up. Everything is about sex. No one can have friendships, everyone should be sleeping with each other. Especially if they're minors or definitely heterosexual. NO THEY ARE IN WUV WITH THEIR BFF SO THEY'RE GAY LULZ... ahem.

[identity profile] litlover12.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I know I shouldn't be surprised by it anymore, but honestly! It's like a mania!

[identity profile] neemarita.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, this.

Celebrating incest and pedophilia and other stuff is just so. messed. up.

Fandom is screwed up.

The XF fandom hated me because I ran Laurie Holden's website and Marita Covarrubias was evil thus Laurie was evil thus I was. Or something. (Laurie is amazing and I have known her since I was, what, 12?)

[identity profile] mosinging1986.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ayep.

[identity profile] litlover12.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's just off-the-charts bizarre.

[identity profile] mosinging1986.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
and Marita Covarrubias was evil thus Laurie was evil thus I was.

Ack, this is common? I had a friend (notice the past tense) who hated Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish so much that she felt they should have quit the roles because the fans hated them. Did you get that? She didn't just hate the characters. She hated the actors. She wished harm to them. At first I thought she was joking/exaggerating. I soon learned that she wasn't.

I didn't realize this insanity extended to other characters - at least, not to the extent where people hated the actors too!

I am so, SO lucky that I fell in with relatively normal people when I began my adventures in fandom. XF was my first. I'd never heard of fandom until that time. If I'd seen the lunacy right off I would've shut off my computer and run into the night!

[identity profile] neemarita.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I think it was in XF fandom because...they are nuts. MULDER/SCULLY 4EVA AND IF YOU DON'T SHIP THEM YOU SUCK. Yeah. I always liked peripheral characters myself. ;)

I do not understand how you can hate the actors, unless you know them/have read crappy things about them/etc. Laurie has called me every birthday since I was 14. Without. Fail. And sent me a wedding present and a onesie for my new baby. She is wonderful. (I'm super glad she's made it big on TV with The Walking Dead! lol)

[identity profile] litlover12.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
But the absolute worst is fanfic about actors. I just . . . I can't even . . . ARGH.

[identity profile] mosinging1986.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
HOLY COW! You know her personally!

*is in awe*

I really wanted to see her on that show. Is it still on?

[identity profile] mosinging1986.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Your icon! LOL!

There, there.

*pets*

Don't you know? All the hobbitses are super sekrit gay lovers! It's true!

*runs*

[identity profile] middlegirl.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
I do not understand how you can hate the actors, unless you know them/have read crappy things about them/etc.

Please tell that to my sister. She still hates Michelle Rodriguez because she hated Analucia on Lost and refuses to see anything else Michelle has been in. At least she realizes that she has no rational explanation for it.

Whereas I was so besotted with Harm/Mac shipperness on JAG that I hated Aussie interloper Mic Brumby, but still got excited when I found out his actor Trevor Goddard had gotten a bit part in Pirates of the Caribbean, and sad when he died shortly after. (Look at me being so tolerant, lol.) It's sad when the sane fans that stick to their principles are so few and far between, but alas, such is fandom.

[identity profile] charleygirl.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand it, either, and it creeps me out.

[identity profile] neemarita.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think so! I don't watch it. I don't like gore. lol

I got in touch with her publicist years ago running her fansite when I was a kid which is how I met Laurie. Hahaha.

So "shipping" is what they call it these days?

They're BOTH minors? Hey it could be worse!

[identity profile] mosinging1986.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly, an excellent point!

[identity profile] mosinging1986.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Very cool!

[identity profile] goldvermilion87.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

On the plus side, it's a nice reminder that when people are shipping your favorite characters, it probably has little to nothing to do with reality.

[identity profile] goldvermilion87.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I always think it's just so... rude!

[identity profile] mosinging1986.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Did it have a different name in Ye Olden Days of fandoms? I have my online foundations in X-Files fandom, where I believe the term originated. (Or at least, was made popular.)

[identity profile] prester-scott.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was "slash."

[identity profile] mosinging1986.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, that's still it for homosexual relationships. Shipping is just relationships of any kind. RelationSHIP = shipping. See how they did that?

*eyeroll*

[identity profile] litlover12.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's that.

[identity profile] prester-scott.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I was never into all that so I didn't know there was a distinction.

[identity profile] mosinging1986.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Lucky you!

[identity profile] ibmiller.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Completely true. And people called those who predicted such things "paranoid" and "hateful" when they predicted the results of continuing to push the abnormal into the normal box...

Don't get me started on the Narnia fandom. Trying to read anything about that series that isn't specifically recommended makes me want to vomit.

[identity profile] mosinging1986.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I wouldn't touch Narnia online fandom with a 10-foot pole! It's bad enough what they've done to Tolkien!

[identity profile] stillsparkling.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yuch! I'm so glad I love classic movies! (I realize there are fanfic communities for those but luckily, I don't have the time. ;) ) Yes, everything has to be sexual, I get the same impression. Two people can't hug out of friendship anymore. Are people really that oversexed? There is this saying that you only obsess over it when you're not getting any (which is crude of course but it may be a reason). Geez, they can call me repressed but it's still disgusting.

[identity profile] ibmiller.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I still remember being horrified as a teenager who had just fallen in love with Tolkien's extended mythos when I read my first man/elf slash.

Blech.

[identity profile] mosinging1986.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I am glad both Tolkien and Lewis died long before the internet. They'd be horrified if they could see what's been done to their beautiful creations! Not that this stuff didn't exist before the internet, but at least it wasn't right there for anyone and everyone to see, 24/7.

I'm guessing in times past, people also had a bit of shame. Perversions of all kinds have always existed and always will. But it seems people used to be a bit more embarrassed about it. Now? Now they're proud of it. And woe be unto you if you dare disagree.

[identity profile] mosinging1986.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I hated the character at first but slowly came to like her very much. And then [that spoilery bad thing] happened and I was so upset!

I had no opinion on the actress because I'd never heard of her prior to this. But when I learned more about her behavior, I came to not like her. (You know, as much as you can like/not like someone you've never met.)

Man alive, I miss my show!

[identity profile] velle.livejournal.com 2012-07-25 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Good grief!

[identity profile] ever-maedhros.livejournal.com 2012-07-25 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Shipping minors--sounds despicable, but somehow, I'm not all that surprised. I've heard of pretty much every unthinkable ship being shipped anyway. Not fun being so knowledgeable in that area . . .

Really, what IS wrong with friendship? *rolls eyes*

[identity profile] ever-maedhros.livejournal.com 2012-07-25 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
They ship the Winchester brothers. BROTHERS! This is not fringe. It's mainstream fandom.

If you don't mind my butting in . . . it's pretty much the one thing I can't stand about the Supernatural fandom. Other than that, it's great. Really, what's wrong with enjoying their relationship as brothers and nothing more? Are Wincest shippers all single children or something? I'm pretty sure they're not, but it boggles my mind that anyone can even think of incest without squirming.

I know. I thought I'd seen it all in XF fandom. Silly me. Good thing I am not really involved in any fandom deeply these days. I just watch the shows, grab some icons and that's about all.
