Not one but two TV series based on Great Expectations are now in development. Where'd that come from?? Did everyone get excited because there was a new miniseries and a new movie, and decide to jump on the bandwagon? But they realize Dickens wrote more than one book, right? Unless gruel and debtor's prison and the guillotine all proved too difficult to modernize . . .

Man, I know, I thought the same thing. Great Expectations isn't even my favorite Dickens! I wonder why they're all adapting that one.

Whaaat? For goodness sake, when are they going to adapt A Tale of Two Cities? Or Dombey and Son? Or any of the other 20+ novels and short stories he wrote!?!

I never understand why these obsessions with adapting a single work seem to pop up. Not that I complain about getting two new Jane Eyres or two new Emmas within a few years. But really, four Great Expectations is a little over the top.

My guess would be that one of these series actually gets picked up, tops. Maybe not even either. These announcements often lead to nothing.

I tend to think that if you're doing a modernization (as opposed to a more "traditional" period adaptation), you go for whatever you think the general public knows well enough to catch the changes and references you make to the original. Or at least if you're selling the project *as* a modern version, anyway.

Yes, that's very true. It's just so odd how the industry has developed this habit of working on two or more similarly-themed projects at the same time.

Tunnel vision - the enduring problem with Hollywood and american television in general - possibly can be translated to unhealthy competition (translation - cheating off your neighbor given official sanction [possibly even encouragement]).
