I had a really similar experience - it was in some anthology of stories for kids my parents had. WHAT is wrong with people including that particular Holmes story in compilations intended for children? There are plenty of non-horrifying Holmes adventures, like the one with the gem that ends up in the goose.

Of course, I was simultaneously creeped out and fascinated, so I'd keep rereading it even though it gave me bad dreams.
