29. Saddest character death OR best/most satisfying character death (or both!)

1. A fictional character you identify with and why.

Harriet Vane in the Lord Peter Wimsey series. We have very different lives and backgrounds, but I connected with her instantly. Her sense of humor, practicality, realism, and resilience all resonate with me. And I think we have a lot -- not all, but a lot -- of the same values and priorities.

2. Your earliest memory of reading or being read to.

I think it was my mom reading us fairy tales when I was six or so. She didn't even like fairy tales; she just read them because I liked them. I owe you one, Mom.

3. Your favourite book aged 9 ½, or 13 ¾, whichever you remember best.

At 13 ¾ I'm pretty sure it was Anne of Green Gables. And I remember that my mom bought it for me when I didn't even really want it. I owe you another one, Mom!

What a blessing your mom has been! As a former librarian, I love to hear that parents read to their kids. You'd be suprised how many don't!

She has indeed!

At the same age I'm sure mine was one of the Anne series too! Though I think back then Anne of Windy Poplars held a special place of honor.

I've read some Wimsey short stories after he married Harriet and her character never jumped out at me then. But I've heard so much about Gaudy Night and others--must really get on them.

So your mom got you Anne, good call, but I'm curious what she preferred in general in lieu of fairy tales.

She liked pretty much anything better than fairy tales! Don't know why -- she just never developed a taste for them, I guess. My parents used to read us Bible story books and other things as well, but the fairy tale book is the first one I can actually remember having read to me.

"Gaudy Night" was my first Wimsey book, and it's very Harriet-focused. I read it for a college class, and after that I went back and DEVOURED all the others. :-) Fortunately, even though "Gaudy Night" is next to last in the Wimsey series -- not counting books that were finished posthumously by others -- it's not at all hard to pick up on what's gone before.
