Well, THAT was out of left field

I was watching Pocket Full of Rye last night -- didn't get to finish yet, as I had to comfort a friend who was distraught about her cat's death -- and one thing seemed awfully weird: Matthew Macfadyen's Inspector Neill was being all proper and dignified and quiet and mature and inspector-like, and all of a sudden he blurted out to the housemaid that the victim was "dead as a dodo!"

What was that about? I've read some Agatha Christie, but I'm not familiar with this one. Does the inspector turn out to have Tourette's, or did Matthew M. just tire of being proper, dignified, etc., and decide to throw in a little improvisation?

I thought the same thing! My best guess is that he was trying to surprise her into saying something she wouldn't otherwise say, but it was rather weird.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one thrown by that. :-) I watched it at least three times, thinking I must be missing something.

Nope--as far as I can tell, it's just odd. :)
