The good, the bad, and the sleazy

(Castle and Leverage spoilers ahead.)

Castle left a foul taste in my mouth last night, I'm sorry to say. I've long been used to the idea that my beliefs about sex are in the minority. But to have an hour full of people basically acting like animals, and glorying in it and flaunting it. . . . And then to have Ryan's fiancee turn up as "Gyrating Jenny" in some manwhore's scrapbook, and the whole team in anguish about whether to tell him, and then have him brush it off because hey, they weren't exclusive at the time, and we're all consenting adults here, right?

Gag me with a spoon.

It's one thing -- it's a great thing -- to love and to forgive. But to not care -- to treat the whole thing as a big harmless joke is just . . . just . . . ugh.

On the other hand, Sunday's Leverage was epic. I could just sit and look at this screencap (courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] kasiopeia at [livejournal.com profile] provideleverage) all day long.

I don't care what anyone says, I love Nate. Seeing him like this makes me feel bereft. He's lost his son, his marriage, his job, and now his father. Is the poor man ever going to catch a break?

(Of course, it's possible I take my television way too seriously.)

I have to admit I feel a little differently about Castle. I agree that the fact she did that is gross. It's totally gross, and depressing to think that this is supposedly some kind of normative behavior. But I'm nonetheless glad Ryan didn't hold it against her. I get really sick of seeing men who sleep around (as we know Ryan did in the first season) getting self-righteous and disapproving about it when unattached women do the same. He'd have no right to get angry with her for doing what he and his buddies would do if the genders were reversed.

I see where you're coming from. Lord knows I'm no fan of the Mark Driscoll "If I'd known she'd cheated on me in high school, I wouldn't have married her!" school of thought. But -- I don't know, I just think of "non-exclusive" very differently. Like maybe you're having dinner or going dancing or just hanging out with several different guys, but not *having sex* with several different guys. (And having them take your picture, and . . . bleah.) I wouldn't have liked to see that from either of them -- I'd have felt the same if it had been his picture in somebody's scrapbook.

Of course I agree with you on principle. I don't think of dating, whether exclusively or otherwise, as a time to jump right into bed. And I think most people aren't comfortable with multiple concurrent sexual relationships - although I know some who are. I simply meant, I was glad there was no double-standard. (Don't know Mark Driscoll, but I associate that sort of attitude, cringe-inducingly, with Angel Clare.) To my mind, a better and more believable reaction from Ryan would have been mild disappointment, which he then put aside. Perhaps a shudder and then, "But we weren't exclusive yet, so I can't be mad."

Yeah . . . just anything that treated it as a bigger deal than, say, forgetting to let the dog out! That's really what I was getting at: the idea of not holding it against her, but not treating it as completely trivial, either. Sitting down and talking it out (not that they'd even have to show it, they could just have him tell us about it), or something.

Driscoll is a preacher and author a big chauvinist. If you haven't heard of him, count your blessings!

He's very popular among folks at my church, but I myself don't know anything about him.

He's popular with a lot of people. It's hard for me to understand why.
