Looks like I got me a new show
So, I saw the Nashville pilot, and my review's just been published. Short version: I like it. I like it a lot. If TV's going to tackle country music, I want them to get it right, and it looks like they're bending over backwards to do just that. It would be fantastic if this series could help country gain a little mainstream attention.
Of course, if this means that a couple of months from now, people will be walking around acting all knowledgeable about bands and singers that they've only just heard of for the first time, it'll be hard not to giggle. But I shall attempt to giggle in a kindly and encouraging manner!
As for the show itself, there are a lot of nice dramatic storylines to follow, and I like the characters just enough to be interested in following them, but not enough to be devastated when they do stupid things. (Because they will. This is a soap. Stupid things are a given.)
So, yep, I think this one's a keeper!

First of all, the actors are all quite good. The kind that have starred in some good films -- step above your typical TV stars. (Dennis Quaid, Carrie-Ann Moss, Michael Chiklis (sp?) ).
Second of all, the characters are AMAZING! Dennis Quaid is [hilariously] a no-nonsense rancher who is unexpectedly made the Sheriff of Vegas. He made his son and brother his deputies, and the relationships are a lot of fun. Michael whateverhisnameis is the head mob guy. He's satisfyingly evil, but also decent in his own way. That is to say, you can sort of enjoy him as a character, while not being conflicted about whether he's actually the bad guy... if that makes sense. The female characters aren't the focus, but they're fine so far. The first three episodes haven't made me think they are going to be the tip of a soapy iceberg, which is nice.
Third of all, COSTUME DRAMA. SIXTIES COSTUME DRAMA. I LOVE COSTUME DRAMA.
And the writing and production values are excellent, in my opinion.
So check it out. Seriously.

Also! It is surprisingly tasteful, especially given that it's about Vegas.
