(What I mean is that I don't feel manipulated by the show, even when it makes me cry - I feel like they've actually constructed these stories in a way that is sincere, and the feeling comes from that.)
Yes, you're right. Sometimes I feel like there's almost a fairytale aspect to things (Ted's unconditional acceptance and love just blew me away!) but I don't feel like they're manipulative. Just the kind of things that CAN happen in this world, even though sometimes I forget they can!
I agree with some of the other commenters: it's good crying, like 'healthy' crying, if you can say that. It shows you both the bad and the good of the era and place where the midwife's lived in a realistic way. I love it, despite the sadness!
Oh, gosh, I loved this show - and the books, too. Did you see my book reviews on Goodreads? If you had, I think that might have been some warning. Glad you watched it, though. Sometimes tears are good and appropriate.

Not that the season 2 episodes aren't good, by the way. Just a bit less of an emotional wringer for the most part.
