Sometimes I worry that Dickens has ruined me for most other Victorian authors. I'm fully aware that Trollope, Thackeray, et al., deserve to be numbered among the greats. I could give you dozens of reasons why they're great. But why can't they have even a fraction of Dickens's wit, or sparkle, or warmth?
