I've been a nervous wreck for two weeks. I've stayed up majorly late (even for me) again and again and again. One night I could hardly sleep at all. I'm hardly getting anything done besides the bare minimum, and sometimes not even that. The stress night after night is turning me old before my time.

Being an Olympics viewer is HARD, people.

Oh, Julia

This poor girl cannot catch a break. Just when she's on the upswing, she gets knocked down again.

You think baseball is a heartrbreaking sport? Try being a skating fan.

For a while I've suspected something, and now I'm almost certain of it: I no longer have the attention span, the mental energy, or the interest to follow a TV series. Over the past few years I've had friends try to get me into "Foyle's War," "Call the Midwife," "Endeavour," "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," and I don't know how many more. Usually I'll give it a try, enjoy a few episodes, realize I don't care whether I ever find out what happens, and drift away.

Thanks for the kind comments about my dental woes! And now I owe you all a nice post to make up for the grumpy posts. So here, have a lovely (and gold-medal-winning!) skate from Alex and Maia Shibutani. I was just bowled over by this.

And bonus silver-medal-winning skate from Jason Brown! I've never been a Jason uberfan, but he did an AMAZING job here.

This sucks

Pardon my French, but I'm bummed. My favorite male skater* is sitting out this season (and possibly longer). My favorite female skater* has a crappy long program this year, and is dealing with injury, and is generally struggling. Skating season has barely begun, and already it SUCKS.

Maybe I should switch to baseball. Those fans seem to be having a great time!

*Current favorite, not all-time favorite!

Silver medal at Worlds for Ashley Wagner!!!! I'm SO PROUD of this girl. The 10-year U.S. women's medal drought is over, and she got to be the one to end it!

. . . is following along on the fans' message board. My favorite comment of this year's Worlds so far, about a lackluster program to "Nessun Dorma": "Turandon't."

Maybe you remember Julia Liptnitskaya, the "little girl in the red coat" from the Olympics; since then she's had a rough time of it on the ice. Between the puberty struggles that all young female skaters have to go through, and a coach who seemed to run out of ideas and interest, she hasn't been living up to her potential at all. Every time she went out on the ice, she looked lost and sad.

A few weeks ago she got a new coach, who is obviously just what the doctor ordered, because yesterday she pulled off this outstanding short program at Russian nationals.

Moments like this remind me why I watch skating. It fills me with joy to see Julia skating with fire and expression, and nailing her jumps, and being so happy with her performance. I keep watching this program, and every time she starts to cry at the end, I start to cry too! It's been a long, tough road for this kid, and she's still not all the way back yet (her long program wasn't as good, and she didn't medal), but I think she's finally back on the right track. Can't wait to see how she does next season!

As I always say, never underestimate the power of a good teacher.

It's U.S. figure skating nationals week again, which means I'm going to be a hand-wringing nervous wreck for the next few days. Sports fandom is not for the faint of heart. I swear the nerves get worse every year. (And I'm only watching; imagine how the skaters feel!)

I seriously have no idea how I'm going to get through this. I'm considering either (1) hibernation or (2) heavy drinking.
litlover12: (PW)
So both my favorite eligible skaters got medals this weekend (first Grand Prix medal ever for Ricky, yay!), and ordinarily I would be over the moon about that. But as things turned out, with a horrific accident in the men's warmup, I was almost too distracted to enjoy it or even realize it at first. Such is life.

(Both skaters who collided are doing okay, they say. Praying that lasts.)

I really do love those two kids, though. No bull.

--Luke Bryan, who sounds like a Muppet with adenoids, wins CMA Entertainer of the Year, and Chris Young, with the most gorgeous voice in the business, gets no CMA nominations at all. Such is the state of country music.

Some friends and I have tickets to see Carmen at the Virginia Opera tonight! This will be my first time seeing it, although, watching as much figure skating as I do, I sort of feel like I've already seen it a dozen times. As Dick Button said, "Every skater goes through a thousand CDs until they find a piece that they like, and then all too often they end up with Carmen."

If I had any artistic talent at all (alas, I don't), I would do a drawing or painting of this photo:

Julia Lipnitskaya made me cry with that long program in the team event. And then she broke my heart in the individual event. I wanted SO BADLY for her to win, or at least medal. But she was under absolutely monstrous pressure, by all accounts. It's a brutal sport, I'm telling you.

No matter what, though, she's one of my favorites from now on. When I fall for a skater, I fall fast, hard, and usually permanently.

Here's my final Atlantic piece on the event, by the way.

At long, long last we've got an Olympic gold medal in ice dance! And it couldn't have happened to a greater team. Congratulations, Meryl and Charlie!! You did us proud!

Worn out and sad here, after a stressful weekend in which every skater I was rooting for at U.S. nationals came in fourth or fifth (except Davis & White, bless them). Clearly I am a jinx. And entirely too emotional to watch any kind of sport, except maybe shuffleboard.

And I had such hope for Richard Dornbush, after a beautiful, clean, record-breaking (!) short program. As Adrian Monk used to say, "Isn't hope the worst?"
litlover12: (PW)
Skating's coming up on NBC . . . so everyone please help me root for Richard Dornbush! :-) He needs to finish in the top two to make it to Worlds!

ETA: Well, maybe next year . . . Thanks for rooting with me, [livejournal.com profile] msantimacassar

U.S. Figure Skating nationals are going on (not live on TV, of course -- that'd be the day! I'm following along online). And my nerves are SHOT. I don't know how football and baseball and basketball fans handle it, I really don't.
litlover12: (BA)
Now we're going to have at least two months -- probably longer -- of griping and moaning on figure skating boards because Davis and White chose a Sinatra medley for their short dance. Sinatra, the king of music, singing some of the greatest songs ever written -- they're calling it kitschy! Why does no one have any taste any more? I ask you!
