Thanks to the miracle of Twitter, I have just had a brief chat with a BBC Radio producer about casting ideas for Sydney Carton in the upcoming A Tale of Two Cities radio drama. (He liked my idea of Benedict Cumberbatch, but wondered if he'd be a better Darnay. I argued for Carton instead.)

AToTC is the only Dickens' book I've read in English (I know! I need to take care of it!) and it helped me understand why Dickens is considered a literary giant. It was powerful. I'd love to see a good adaptation of it.

Btw, I've been wondering about Dickens' use of name - for example, about the AToTC lawyer, Mr. Stryver. Do you think it has anything to do with the verb 'to strive'? Oh, and I feel like I should apologize in advance for any silly questions I might ask - I'm not of English/English language background, so I'm often terribly ignorant of things which are pretty obvious to all of you who are. I hope you don't mind. :)

No, not at all. You're right -- Dickens does that sort of thing all the time. In "Hard Times," for example, there's a strict schoolmaster called Mr. M'Choakumchild!

I think having Cumberbatch as both would be an interesting sort of nod to the fact that they looked identical, and he'd be quite capable of doing two different voices.

I'm going to read Great Expectations next. Im familiar with the story, but haven't read the novel yet. Is there any GE adaptation you particularly recommend?

Of the ones I've seen, I like the 1989 miniseries the best. The 1946 version was good, but the 1989 one was more faithful to the story, and better acted on the whole, I think.

Interestingly, Jean Simmons was in both -- as young Estella in 1946, and as Miss Havisham in 1989. She was marvelous both times.
