Jackpot!

While out antiquing today, I picked up this record from a stack of bluegrass albums. My dad adores bluegrass (and plays it himself, having taken up the banjo a few years ago). It felt like kind of a stupid purchase because we don't have a record player anymore -- but I knew a lot of the musicians were favorites of his, and it was only 10 bucks, and I figured that, if nothing else, he could enjoy the liner notes and pictures. And I just like buying presents. So I took it home and handed it over with an "I guess this is a pretty dumb gift, but here you go."

Well. It seems I inadvertently hit the motherlode of bluegrass. Turns out this is one of THE GREAT BLUEGRASS ALBUMS OF ALL TIME, and the version he had on CD wasn't complete. He lit up like a Christmas tree. :-) You should have seen him running around the house telling us all about how and when and where and why it was recorded, and generally just marveling over it. It was so cute. And especially nice because he hasn't been feeling too well lately, but the record perked him right up.

Suffice it to say, I'm pretty sure we're going to have another record player in the house pretty soon now! Also pretty sure that he's going to drag me back to that antique store and go through the rest of that stack, as soon as he feels up to it. And now we know where I got my fangirling tendencies. My mom fangirls a few singers -- Elvis most of all -- but she's not intense about it like Dad and I are. (Read: She's sane.)

P.S. Oh, and jackpot part 2: I found a T-shirt for my godson, size 24 months, with a Charles Dickens quote on it. SCORE!

A bit random for a baby outfit, maybe. :-) But it was still really cool.

At the baby shower for one of my grad school friends, we all were given white onesies, and cloth pens to decorate them. I thought it was a GREAT baby shower idea. And since it was a group of 20 nerds, the onesies were... unique. Mine was just quotations. :-P

It was COMPLETELY random [and I did it for that reason--I cannot draw]. I definitely put "Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediment." "To boldly go where no man has gone before" "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" "Nor love thy life nor hate, but what thou livs't live well, how ever long or short permits to heaven" And probably a whole lot of other totally inappropriate for little babies sorts of quotations. I might have triedfor some famous kids books... but I can't remember...

The mandolin's a lovely instrument -- though if I were going to take up another instrument, it'd probably be the fiddle. :-) Have you heard Sierra Hull? I don't have a lot of bluegrass CDs myself, but I do own her latest one!

She used to sneak out to go see his movies (because her family was Catholic, and I guess the church didn't approve of him at the time). Maybe she's a little more intense than I give her credit for being. :-)

I think it's hilarious that he was considered so controversial 'back in the day'. I'm as button-down conservative as they come, and I just shake my head at the silliness of it all. It's like an entirely different world.

Ooh, the fiddle would be a marvelous instrument to play, too! I haven't heard of Sierra Hull, but I will have to check her out. Thanks for the recommendation! :-) Have you listened to any of Nickel Creek's albums? I love them. So sad that they disbanded, because they were one of my favourites!
