Writer's Block: 9/11
Sep. 11th, 2011 08:07 pm[Error: unknown template qotd]In a meeting in downtown D.C., about eight blocks from the Capitol building. When we got out of the meeting -- the man running it was one of those by-the-book retired Army types who actually wanted to keep the meeting going, even after we heard what was going on! -- well, anyway, when we got out, we heard the rumors about a plane still in the air somewhere, perhaps on its way to our city.
When I think about it, I guess it's just possible that the passengers on Flight 93 may have saved my life. If that particular plane had made it to D.C. but not gotten to its target . . .
Just a couple of hours before that, I had been at the Pentagon, where I used to catch the Metro for my ride into the city every day. I still remember what a beautiful fall morning it was, as I walked from my carpool dropoff point to the esclator that goes down to the Pentagon Metro stop. Later that day, having gotten a ride home with a colleague and her husband, I rode back past the Pentagon, on the side where there was now a gaping hole with thick black smoke billowing out.
My mom thinks she saw the plane as it passed over our patio. She definitely saw one go past and remembers thinking how low it was -- and it was just about the right time.
It may have been ten years ago, but I don't think those memories will ever grow old.
