Just for kicks, and using a link provided by [livejournal.com profile] digne, I took the Myers-Briggs test. It says I'm an INFJ. Reading this description, I almost laughed out loud when I got to this part:

"They are highly private people, with an unusually rich, complicated inner life. Friends or colleagues who have known them for years may find sides emerging which come as a surprise."

You guys, that is so me. I get this ALL THE TIME, sometimes from people who've known me for decades. "I'm so surprised that you like country music/thought that joke was funny/said that thing the other day," etc., etc., etc. Apparently I am constantly astonishing people, and I've never understood why. I always want to say, "Dude, I'm the same person I always was! What's the big surprise?"

(Which would probably draw a response of "I'm so surprised you said 'Dude'!")

I'm still not 100 percent certain I understand it, but hey, now at least I know there's a recognized personality type for it!

So now I want to try following [livejournal.com profile] digne's lead, and type some fictional characters. I wonder what type Sydney Carton would be . . . ? At first glance, I thought ISFJ, but on further examination, I'm not sure that's quite right.

ETA: I just took the test as Sydney . . . and got INFJ. Either I wasn't able to adopt his persona fully enough, or Mr. Carton and I are a lot more alike than I realized!

I tend to get INFP most often, but sometimes my I turns into an E, and sometimes my P turns into a J... Basically, the only thing Myers-Briggs is sure of is that I'm an intuitive feeler, hah!

ETA: Soooo, of course I just took this and got something completely different (ISFJ). Apparently nobody has any idea who I am. XD

Anyway, mostly commenting here to say I LOVE taking personality tests as fictional characters! It's almost more fun than taking them as myself. :D

Interesting! I've only taken the test once and gotten ISFJ which kind of fits. According to a profile I read somewhere Dr. Watson and David Copperfield are also ISFJs.

I'm not really of the opinion that people can be pigeon-holed but it is certainly fun to try it with fictional characters!

I knew we had a lot in common! I'm ENFJ but only borderline on the E. I know what you mean about surprising people. Either that, or people tend to think they "corrupted" me or influenced me, when it's just ME feeling more comfortable with them.

Ha! I have been known to say to people, "You've corrupted me!" on occasion. :-)

The Myers-Briggs is fascinating. I've taken it at least two or three times and I tend to come up INTJ or ISTJ. We did it at work at one job and I was not at all surprised to find out that the one guy in our department that I never seemed to understand or click with? We were exact opposites on all four markers.

I'm either INFJ or ISFJ - my N/S is really close.

I did it and got INTP.

Then it told me that a fictional INTP character is Sherlock Holmes.

THIS IS A TRUE STORY!

(Furthermore, I almost always get INTP)

I'm an INTP as well. Although I think Sherlock is more of an "S" type. But then he's also a fictional character so Doyle could combine lots of different things into him.

BUT the one good thing about being an INTP is we get both Einstein and Stephen Sondheim!

The thing I love about Myers-Briggs is that it very flexible. It's not just 16 types, But every person has both I and E, S and N etc ... it's just in varying degrees. So two people of the same Myers-Briggs type can be VERY VERY different people. For example, as an INTP I feel much more in common with Sondheim than Einstein.

I am also an INFJ, though I'm close to being an INFP (my sister is an INFP). As to judging the "types" of fictional characters, I can totally see Sidney Carton as an INFJ. Snape, in my humble opinion, is an INFJ, and the two guys have some similarities, don't they?

So that was one of Dickens's descendants playing Herbert Pocket? I thought he was great!

I don't know Tale of Two Cities well enough to comment on your assessment of Sydney. But having read Little Dorrit recently I can tell you that Amy is an ISFJ and Arthur is an NF of some sort probably an INFJ or INFP. I'll have to think about that.

This stuff is very fascinating. (For the record, I wouldn't have expected you to say "Dude", either; then I remembered that I'm not the type of person people would expect to say it, either, and I still do sometimes.) I think it's a good thing to have a personality type with so many layers, nobody can ever exactly predict you. It's nice to be constantly finding a new side to a person. :)

Since I love these kinds of kicks, I took the test myself for the first time. And, I have to say, WOW. INTJ describes me down to a T. I'm impressed.
