Technology hates me

There's nothing like a common household appliance or machine to make you feel like an idiot.
My car CD player is slowly going berserk. I bought the "Les Miserables" deluxe movie soundtrack (hush now,
goldvermilion87). Tried to play it in my car, but it started skipping badly on "One Day More." Cleaned the CD -- no luck. Cleaned the CD player (twice) -- no luck. Took it back and got another one. Put it in and started playing "One Day More," just because that's where I'd left off before. And then THAT CD started skipping!
So what is the deal here? A bad batch of CDs that went to Target, or an incurably bad CD player? (I should mention that something similar happened with a different CD before this, but cleaning the CD did make it better in that case.)
