I thought you might appreciate this: My two top seventh-grade classes get to read A Christmas Carol this time of year... On the first day of actual reading, one of my classes laughed -- nervously, at first, in a sort of shock -- because they weren't expecting Scrooge to be funny, and weren't sure if he was supposed to be funny, and weren't sure they were aloud to laugh at him -- at least once a page. You know, in the beginning, where Scrooge is being unbelievable unpleasant to everyone in sight. They thought it was "funnier than the Muppets version" (thank God! I'm not sure if I could have contained myself if they had said the reverse.)
