If you are, please tell me -- does the writing get better? I'm only about halfway through the first ep on the DVR, and the writing keeps making me wince. I want to watch this for a number of reasons: the acting is good, the period and premise are interesting, and most of all, I love Alexandria. It's just a few miles from me and it's a really cool place, and I love the idea of a historical drama set there. But ugh, this writing! If the endless cliches and the clunky, on-the-nose lines don't let up, I may have to bail.

I bailed after the first episode. The writing was so bad!

I have heard it was really bad. Granted, that's from fellow CW reenactors - but there were as many criticisms of the writing as there were of the clothing, hairstyles, etc. Too bad - the US needs to do something *good* with period stuff.

I hadn't heard of it until now. But immediately warning bells went off. A Civil War story? From PBS?

That can't bode well!

Well, it didn't get any better in the second ep.

I'm glad it wasn't just us.

I liked the first episode mostly because of the pretty costumes and cinematography, but yeah, the writing is not so good. The second episode was pretty disappointing and had some elements that I most certainly didn't like. It's so rare to find a newer period drama set in that period though that I will probably hold out another episode or two but I don't have much hope, sadly.

That's such a shame. I had high hopes for this series. :-(
