Am currently watching The Social Network, and I have to say: That score won a Golden Globe and is a frontrunner for the Oscar? That score? Half of it sounds like a squirrel on crack, and the other half sounds like a cow being strangled.

Well, ya know, David Fincher, so it has to be amazingly arty and excellent, right, I mean, anyone who doesn't see that is a moron who probably hated Se7en, right, ya know...

Yes. I've been avoiding Social Network for a whole lot of reasons...

I was curious to see it because so many critics have been complaining that the Oscar contest seems to be tilting in the direction of "The King's Speech." I wanted to be informed about the movie they were advocating instead.

. . . . And now that I'm informed, I can officially say that they're insane and I REALLY want TKS to sweep the Oscars. :-) I cannot imagine why anyone would think that TSN deserved to win.

So, was it just the crazy music, or was the whole movie kinda a pretty picture of perversion?

Not exactly. . . . I've been trying to define my problem with it, and I think the best way to put it is that, as well-acted and well-written as it was, it could not make me care. Not about the characters (there was only one supporting character that I felt a *little* something for), or what they did, or anything that happened to them. None of it seemed to matter at all. Whereas "The King's Speech" made me care passionately.

The critics define this as a contest of heart against head, and make it sound like the latter is much more important. I'd say it's more a case of humanity against soullessness.

Another, more succinct, way to put it is that TSN was all style and no substance.

Well, that does sound a lot like Fincher. Hooper I'm still not sure what I think about - I wept during King's Speech, but I think Daniel Deronda was a much better whole (despite the deeply flawed book it was based upon).

I also think there should have been some exception on the animated feature list, so Tangled could at least get nominated. I mean, I think Toy Story 3 deserves the win, and wouldn't necessarily mind The Illusionist winning to make up for the director losing to Finding Nemo eight years ago, but I think Tangled was a much more artful work in every way than How To Train Your Dragon. Admittedly, there's company things going on, I imagine - after all, it wouldn't be that great if one company dominated the tiny list. But I don't think Dreamworks has gotten to the point where I think they deserve to exclude such a beautiful in image and spirit film as Tangled.

Woah, sorry for my rant-tumor there. Yeah, King's Speech was great, and if it doesn't win Colin Firth the Oscar this time round my opinions of the Oscars will plummet to an all time low. And since even if he wins I will think they're pretty much pond scum on trashheap boot soles, that's pretty low.
