14. The Odd Couple (1968; dir. Gene Saks; starring Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau)
Neil Simon's story of two divorced men trying to share an apartment might even get my vote for the funniest movie ever made. Jack Lemmon, one of my favorite actors, has never been more neurotic or more adorable. And slobbish Walter Matthau is a brilliant foil. There are so many great scenes, it was really hard to pick just one!
13. All about Eve (1950; dir. Joseph L. Mankiewicz; starring Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders)
A seemingly sweet young woman comes into an actress's life . . . and then starts taking it over. One of the dishiest and best tales of backstage life ever told, with what should have been an Oscar-winning performance from Bette Davis, ably backed up by Anne Baxter, George Sanders (and his yummy voice), Gary Merrill, Celeste Holm, and Thelma Ritter. And yes, that's Marilyn Monroe in an early bit part.
Next up: The Lion in Winter and It's a Wonderful Life.

Date: 2011-03-27 04:53 pm (UTC)Wasn't Bette something? There's another great moment in that film where she walks past someone she's angry at, and she drags her fur coat over his head. I can't really describe it, it has to be seen, but it's so funny. She was amazing.
