day_by_drabble is my new crack. Seriously. I'm constantly refreshing to see if any new stories have come in. If you love good fanfic, hie thee hence!
(Note: As on many fanfic sites, some of them are steamier and/or kinkier than I prefer, but with the ratings, warnings, and descriptions, anything you don't want to read is very easy to avoid.)
Rather unfortunately, I tend to perseverate in one or two fandoms, so I don't even KNOW a lot of the stuff in day by drabble. (also, can't quite bring myself to read Austen fanfic...)
1. Because the Austen fandom, in my opinion, may be one of the worst for appreciating the trappings rather than the literature--the regency setting and costuming, the attractive male actors, the attractive male characters, for that matter, rather than the sparkling dialogue of Pride and Prejudice. I don't have any interest in a fiction-oriented Mr. Darcy squee.
And corollary to that, I'm skeptical of the ability to match her writing.
2. Because (and this is less a criticism than a personal taste) I think that a novel is a closed work of art. I'm not really interested in Lizzie as a little girl, or Lizzie's first child. I'm interested in Lizzie as presented by Austen in Pride and Prejudice. This is why I personally have written hardly any LotR fic, despite LotR being my first and most important fandom, and why I revel in Sherlock fic--because LotR is a closed novel [and that's a controversial claim, but I'm sticking to it for now :-) ], but Sherlock (and Sherlock Holmes) is serial, so invites addition. Again, that's just taste not criticism.
I'm sure I can be pleasantly surprised. I read your Little Dorrit fic mainly because you are my lj friend, so I wanted to see what you'd written, and I was really impressed by the way the style was very Dickensian, and the idea was very subtle. I am just too cynical (and too sure that my cynicism is justified) to believe fics like your Little Dorrit one are the rule and not the exception.
All of which boils down to, I'm a fussy grump. :-P
Nah. That makes sense. :-) There was actually a small discussion going on over there today -- don't know if you saw it -- about the problems with a lot of Austen fic, and it's true, I haven't seen much of it that's good. "P&P in a modern-day high school!" is not my cup of tea.
Anyway -- all this makes me appreciate your kind compliments about my LD fic all the more! Thanks so much! (Truth be known, though I've written several pieces of Dickens fic, I've never tried to imitate his style before, because I didn't think I could come even remotely close. They didn't call him "The Inimitable" for nothing! But since I started off with some of his own lines this time, I felt I'd better try, so with the help of a friend, I did the best I could.)
I'm bold enough to just hop right into this discussion... Mainly because I've been reading some fanfic and thinking about it lately. I have a tedious 'real' book and need some distraction. Yes, there is a lot of rubbish fanfic, also on the period drama subject. And because there's a lot of rubbish, it's hard and takes time to filter out the good ones. But I (personally) think there is enjoyable and well-written Austen fanfic. There are even good modern Austen fics (albeit a few...)
Maybe I personally like modern Austen fics because I agree with goldvermilion87 that P&P is a closed novel. But there are also very interesting takes on Austen characters whose stories are not closed in her novels; Georgiana Darcy for example.
