  • What a thoroughly delightful bunch of kids. Their language could have used some cleaning up, but they worked together so well and made the whole thing seem so real. As the saying goes, I could have watched them read the phone book. (One of them would have filmed the reading, another two would be making eyes at each other the whole time, and yet another would end by setting the phone book on fire.) And it was cool that we got to see their zombie movie at the end! Even though it was a bit gross.
  • Kyle Chandler never ages. Deal with the devil, or just good genes?
  • I can't believe Elle Fanning could actually do that thing with her hair, and not have it fall out. I wish I had hair like that. It would be so convenient on hot days to just tie it in a knot, and have it stay put. Mine won't stay without about 975 bobby pins and a couple of gallons of hairspray.
  • I could do without the trend of BIG LOUD SCARY SHOCKING NOISES OUT OF NOWHERE in movies. I know it was a monster movie, but really. I jumped so many times that I spent more time in the air than in my seat.
  • They captured the E.T. vibe that they were going for pretty well. Although I would have vastly preferred another cute little harmless alien.
  • At times the movie reminded me of nothing so much as a Thomas Hardy novel, where everything that can possibly go wrong does go wrong, and then even more stuff goes wrong.
  • But Kyle Chandler wore not one but TWO uniforms during the movie, which is proof that someone up there really likes me.
  • Like heck I'd give up my dead mother's necklace to help a people-eating alien build his ship! Let him find his own dang necklace!!

It was. Scary but good. I'll copy one short passage from the post here so you can see it: "I could do without the trend of BIG LOUD SCARY SHOCKING NOISES OUT OF NOWHERE in movies. I know it was a monster movie, but really. I jumped so many times that I spent more time in the air than in my seat."

I liked it overall, though. I really liked the kids and their story. They were wonderful little actors. The story was a bit slight, but pretty well told on the whole. There was a definite "E.T." vibe to it -- in *some* ways. Not all.

There was sort of a pattern to it -- it would be daytime and the kids would be doing their thing, and Kyle Chandler would be doing his thing and being all adorable, and everything was just fine. Then it would be night and LOUD HORRIFYING THINGS would happen. Then it would be daytime again . . . and so on. If I had my (cowardly) way, I would have cut out all the night parts and just had it be daytime all the way through. :-) No one would come to see it, of course, but I'd enjoy it!

LOL!! Thanks for the warning. I'm jumpy like that, only I used to scream too. Loudly. I've worked hard through the years at overcoming it. Now I just jump silently. For the most part. *g*

What do you expect from someone who spent 5th & 6th grade with a teacher who would walk around the back of the students' desks as they were deep in thought on a piece of work, and then, for fun, just CRACK his yardstick on an empty desk behind someone, just to see which kid would jump the highest?

Seeing as how he did it so much to me, I guess I was the one. "Jumpy, aren't we?" he would say.

I never really thought about that until I was well into adulthood. I adored that man and worshipped the ground he walked on. But looking at it from an adult point of view, I have to admit he was a little nuts. Some of the stuff he would do would get him in big trouble today.
