Hallmark Channel is airing the Hollywood episodes of I Love Lucy right now, which inspired a thought: Lucy -- at least as portrayed on the show -- was the ultimate fangirl. It isn't a modern phenomenon at all! We may think we're obsessed because we write fanfic and create fanart and make tribute videos. But getting into a staring contest with William Holden, or trying to sneak a grapefruit out of Richard Widmark's yard, or stealing John Wayne's footprints? You don't generally get that sort of thing now.

Date: 2011-08-06 09:46 pm (UTC)The weird thing is, it wasn't until way into adulthood that it suddenly dawned on me that she was a beautiful woman. I saw a magazine photo of her all dressed up and it was like... oh! I was used to seeing her dressed weirdly and/or acting like a lunatic! But she was a stunningly beautiful woman. Who knew?
