[livejournal.com profile] msantimacassar  and I have just been discussing how difficult it is to keep track of the not one but two Great Expectations adaptations that are in the works. (While it's wonderful that so many people want to celebrate Dickens's bicentennial next year, some of them apparently forgot that he wrote anything else! Although I hear there's also going to be an Edwin Drood miniseries.)

For those of you who are interested, we're tracking developments over at Dickensblog. But here's the Cliffs Notes version:

Feature film:

Pip -- Jeremy Irvine
Estella -- Holliday Grainger
Miss Havisham -- Helena Bonham Carter
Magwitch -- Ralph Fiennes

Filming will start in October, and the film will be released sometime in 2012.

BBC miniseries:

Pip -- Douglas Booth
Magwitch -- Ray WInstone

Gillian Anderson is in talks for Miss Havisham. Filming starts in July, and the miniseries will air around Christmas on BBC One, and then come to PBS in spring 2012.

Miss Havisham -- Helena Bonham Carter

How'd I know? How'd I know?

Your icon = awesome. :-D And yes, I think they made a great choice there! I actually had hopes of seeing Maggie Smith tackle it, but they went younger -- and it's true Miss Havisham is only supposed to be in her forties or fifties, when you get right down to it.

The one with Justine Waddell will always have a special place in my heart. It was the first adaptation I'd ever seen of Great Expectations. I do look forward to Holliday Grainger's Estella. She's very beautiful. I could see her being able to play an ice princess. I always viewed Havisham as the ice queen.

Oh, wow! Helena Bonham Carter and Ralph Fiennes? Hoo boy. I'm going to have major Harry Potter deja vu when I eventually see this . . .

Do you mean the Claude Rains version? That's the only one I've seen.

Isn't he just the best? I loved that film. I agree they went the obvious route, though. I'll be interested to see what the miniseries does . . . if indeed it's still in the works. I haven't heard anything recently -- it's been all "Great Expectations," all the time.

Hehe, thanks for putting up the cliff notes version :)

Ralph Fiennes has a nose! I can't wait for both of these!
