"Wicked vs. Evil"? REALLY? Who came up with that one, a kindergartener?

Especially when you know they're both going to end up best buddies, going around whining about how they're just misunderstood. We couldn't have anyone actually being bad, you know. Even if they're homicidal maniacs.

(Apologies to anyone who's still into the show. I just couldn't take it anymore.)

That exceedingly lame reveal in the queen's flashback tonight . . .

Here's season 2 of Once Upon a Time in a nutshell:

*Regina murders and pillages and causes general mayhem on all sides*

Regina: Why does everyone call me The Evil Queen? I can't understand it!

Other characters: Oh, poor thing, she's right. We really should be nicer to her.

Me: *facepalm*

. . . about Once Upon a Time. I do enjoy it, though not in the way I thought I would at first. I thought it would be all sweeping and grand and romantic -- instead of which, it's just good hokey fun with an occasional dollop of romance and tragedy. It's never yet successfully pulled off a "surprise reveal" -- in fact, the way it telegraphs its "surprises" has become something of a running joke among the fans. (ETA: No, I'm wrong. They managed to keep the truth about Red Riding Hood and the wolf a surprise. There's an exception to every rule.) Still, there's something appealing, even addictive, about it.

Plus, when Snow insisted that "Good always wins" tonight, I took great pleasure in remembering Dark Helmet's "Evil will always win, because good is dumb." (And Lord knows, some of the good guys on this show tend to bear him out on that.) Any show that reminds you of Spaceballs, unwittingly or not, can't be all bad.

And yet . . . )

How, with multiple writers and editors and actors and producers and Lord knows who else involved in the process, did NO ONE catch the unintentional hilarity of a line like "My daughter's curse is coming"?

I swear, Regina's "Here! She! Is!" sounded exactly like she was auditioning to play Mama Rose in Gypsy.

Once upon a Time viewers, raise your hand if you wanted him to finish that with ". . . she walks into mine."

This . . . this dress is PERFECT. It's beyond perfect. It's the dress I'd have designed for myself if I knew how to design dresses.

Now all I need is a man!

It sucks to be Prince Charming, pardon my French. Whatever lifetime he's in, he has to make all sorts of heroic sacrifices for people who aren't even his real family members.

I've found some of the best shows just because everyone else was always going on about how great they are. Like Once Upon a Time.

Oddly, though I've always been fond of fairy tales, I wasn't that interested at first -- I guess I couldn't see how network primetime TV could pull off a convincing one. And I did think it started out a bit stilted, when I finally took a look at it. But goodness, how it's grown on me over the course of only three episodes! I'm totally on board now, and then some. I haven't been this anxious about what was going to happen to Snow White since I was, oh, about five years old. And I really like how they're using the traditional framework with all these new little twists thrown in -- like how Prince Charming got his name! Love it.

Also, nice to see Jennifer Morrison with a regular role again, and this time as someone who's not an annoying self-righteous twit. Take THAT, House. (Though I can't say I care overmuch for the "birth mother comes back to save kid from evil adoptive mother" idea. Adoption gets stigmatized enough as it is.)

But oh my word, poor daddy of the evil queen! YIKES! I felt awful for him. Though I suppose he should have known that a "Max and Norma from Sunset Boulevard" kind of setup is never going to end well. (I know it was a father in this case instead of an ex-husband, but still, there were uncomfortable similarities.) And that, when your daughter considers ripping your heart out, even for a fleeting moment, it's not a good time to give her hugs. It's a good time to -- as my own father would say -- whup her like a yard dog. And then RUN.
