I did it -- I made my list of the top five performances by actors and top five by actresses. And let me tell you, it was not easy. (Add usual disclaimers about how there are lots of great films I haven't seen, how I may change my mind tomorrow, etc.) I appreciated all the comments on my original post -- they were enjoyable to read and helped me think things through!

So let me give you the lists, and I'll explain a little about my reasoning after that. Going from last to first in each list . . .

Remember that top 20 movies list I made once? Remember how I said I might revise it someday? The day has come! There's one movie that's new and that just had to be added, and one old one that, after a couple more viewings, I realized had earned a spot. And so, from last to first . . .

20. An Affair to Remember (1957)
19. The Court Jester (1955)
18. The Sword in the Stone (1963)
17. The Princess Bride (1987)
16. Charade (1963)
15. Les Misérables (2012)
14. The Odd Couple (1968)
13. All about Eve (1950)
12. The Lion in Winter (1968)
11. It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
10. The King's Speech (2010)
9. 1776 (1972)
8. Rear Window (1954)
7. The Sound of Music (1965)
6. The Philadelphia Story (1940)
5. Casablanca (1942)
4. Notorious (1946)
3. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)
2. My Fair Lady (1964)
1. Singin' in the Rain (1952)

(I still love Shadowlands and The Thin Man, though!)

Interesting! It seems that Citizen Kane is no longer the greatest film ever made -- at least, according to the prestigious Sight & Sound poll. For the first time ever, it's been knocked out of the top spot. This time, Vertigo was voted the greatest film ever made. Articles are here and here. (Watch out for major Citizen Kane spoilers in that second one. If you don't yet know what Rosebud is, I'd hate to be the one to ruin it for you.)

I've always thought that if I had to pick the best film ever made -- the best, objectively speaking, not my favorite -- I would probably go with Casablanca. However, there's the indisputable fact that Vertigo is a Jimmy Stewart film . . . and a darned good one at that. So, I can definitely live with this pick. The fact that it's a Hitchcock film as well is just gravy.

One more thing: I hope it doesn't make me a total philistine that I've always found Sunrise and 2001 -- voted #5 and #6, respectively -- way overrated. I don't care how pretty it is to look at -- aside from the parts with the homicidal computer, 2001 is about as thrilling as watching whiteout dry.

Once upon a Time viewers, raise your hand if you wanted him to finish that with ". . . she walks into mine."

Queensjoy at [livejournal.com profile] ogeecons is selling custom icons, banners, mood themes, and wallpapers to make a little traveling money. She does really nice work -- the Casablanca icon on this post is one of hers. She also made my Dorothy L. Sayers icon and my Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane icon. Her prices are reasonable, too. If you're in the market for some artwork, just go here and tell her what kind of package you want -- so many icons, a wallpaper of such and such a size, whatever -- she'll list it on her Etsy site, and then you can place your order. (Check the Etsy site first, because she already has a few packages listed.)

Get ready for romance! And comedy, and heartbreak, and some of the best drunk scenes of all time.

ABC is running a Best in Film special tonight, and I'm posting a list of my 20 favorite movies. The two events are not related. Actually, I had the idea before I heard about the special -- though I'll probably watch it and fume about it, much as I used to watch and fume about the old AFI movie list shows.

I just think it's fun to make lists -- not least because it helps me avoid doing actual work. But it's hard in its own way. I'm still not certain that this list is exactly the way I want it, and a few months from now I may revisit it and do some rearranging. In fact, there's a good chance I'll end up fuming over my OWN list. That seems to be the nature of these things.

I'm not calling this a meme, because I'm not sure whether anyone else is OCD enough to make a list of 20 favorite movies, but you may treat it as one and make your own list if you so desire! Maybe we'll all end up getting some good suggestions from each other.

In order, then, from #20 to #1: )

1. Reply to this post, and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of Icon Squee!

Here are my icons that [livejournal.com profile] sonneta  picked:

Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane are one of my all-time favorite couples, so when I saw this icon at [livejournal.com profile] ogeecons , I just had to have it. And since I've had it, I've been surprised to learn how many other people love them too. It's gotten a ton of compliments. The lyric goes so perfectly with the couple!

Gadzooks, it's Sir Percy! (In some ways I think of him as a precursor to Lord Peter.) Anthony Andrews is one of my favorite actors, and he played that dashing, heroic, hilarious Pimpernel to perfection. This, I believe, is from the scene where he's conveying his horror over Chauvelin's substandard cravat. Got it via [livejournal.com profile] kemmi .

I haven't seen Aladdin in years, but I have very fond memories of the Genie. This was another one I just had to have as soon as I saw it. The expression is priceless. Got this one from [livejournal.com profile] jaysta_11 .

A recent acquirement, though I've been wanting an Early Edition icon for a long time. In my opinion, it was hands-down Kyle Chandler's best show and best role ever, and this picture of Gary with a rare smile (poor darling, he got so few opportunities to smile!) makes me melt into a puddle. Love the plaid thing, too. For some reason, it seems that a lot of my favorite TV guys tend to wear plaid, so this icon was especially fitting for me. (See also the icon on this post!) Got this from [livejournal.com profile] akamarykate .

In case you didn't pick up on this from the Gary, Percy, and Peter icons, I'm one of those girls who loves the good guys. Always have, always will. Give me the Pimpernel -- Chauvelin can go jump. But there's one exception: I'm in serious trouble whenever Captain Louis Renault appears. He's bad, I know he's bad, but I can't help it -- he's Claude Rains! And Claude Rains is sexy! That smile -- that voice -- the way he calls Rick "Ricky" -- the jaunty air. . . . Excuse me, I need to go open a window. It's gotten very hot in here.

(But he DOES reform at the end!)

This one is also from [livejournal.com profile] ogeecons .

If you want to chat about some of your icons, comment below and I'll pick five!
