Conundrum

I've made a rather interesting discovery. My online friends who are logical and rational love Sherlock Holmes because he's like them. My online friends who are guided by their emotions love Sherlock Holmes because he isn't like them.

Is a puzzlement, as the king of Siam said.

Me -- well, I love Peter Wimsey. :-) Okay, I know the two aren't mutually exclusive (Dorothy L. Sayers was very fond of Holmes, as I recall), but truthfully, I've never gotten much into Holmes at all. I have read some of the stories, but it was long, long ago, which makes me feel a little like the class dunce sometimes when everyone around me is conversing knowledgeably about hounds and dancing men and what not. Perhaps the larger conundrum is how I ended up belonging to such a vast online network of Sherlockians! It wasn't because of the BBC Sherlock -- I met most of my online buddies based on other interests, and before BBC Sherlock was born or thought of. But it was when the show came out that I became aware of just how many Sherlock-loving online buddies (SLOBs? Hee!) I actually had.

Well, Audible.com did recently supply me with a free audio version of "Blue Carbuncle," so perhaps I'll start getting caught up . . .

I love Sherlock Holmes because he is talented, but lazy and selfish -- so selfish that he doesn't even realize it BUT he is being shown his evil ways and changing. I am talented, but lazy and selfish -- so selfish that I don't always realize it -- and I WANT to see my evil ways and change.

How do I fit in?

:-P

(And I think Sherlock is the best REALLY literary thing out there right now, so it makes sense you have loads of Sherlockian friends. :-) )

You, as I already told you, are terrifyingly intelligent. So you and Sherlock have that in common.

But I am NOT prepared to agree with you on the "lazy and selfish" part!

That's because you haven't had to spend an extended period of time with me in real life...

:-(

I don't believe it. :-p

When I talk about Sherlockian friends, btw, I'm talking about people who have been ACD-Holmes fans from way, way back, not just fans of the new show. Not sure if I made that clear.

I guess that's SLIGHTLY more odd. That being said, you have a lot of friends who love classic literature. Many of those friends (myself included) are fans of Sherlock Holmes, and probably had a phase where it was ALL ABOUT HOLMES.

Had Sherlock not come out, I'd still say I loved Sherlock Holmes, but I wouldn't be talking about it all the time. Maybe that's what's going on?

Yes, maybe that's it!

SLOBs - LOL!!

I got suckered into watching the new Sherlock show. (You know, the one where Sherlock and Watson are super sekrit gay lovers?)

I did start reading some of the stories. I got one of those cheap NOOK books that has 3789375743324 classic novels in one.

Oh dear. Well, I admit to a familiarity with ACD - I had read and was fond enough of his work to have the collected Holmes stories and novels (as well as the hardcover volume of the collection with the original Strand illustrations) resident on my shelves well before my brain was hijacked by the BBC reboot. I've been a fan of Laurie R. King's Holmes fic since I pulled Beekeeper's Apprentice off a shelf completely randomly (sometimes I still go into a bookstore with the sole aim of buying a random [OK, not completely random, but close enough] book) when I was 16.

There are a lot of talented writers cranking out fic for Sherlock so I'm not surprised those authors are tangentially ending up in your sphere. I'm also very happy to be counted as one of your SLOBs. :-)

Definitely love both. It's difficult to say which I love more - Lord Peter is clearly a higher literary product, but Sherlock Holmes has an ongoing fandom and a much deeper world (because of the high quantity of original canon and fanfic and shows and films).
